Self-Care September

I've been itching to start writing again and right now seems like the perfect time. I'm starting a new job, just officially started my Ph.D. and I feel like my perspective has changed a lot in the last couple of months.

While I'm someone who preaches the importance of taking care of yourself mentally and physically I have a really hard time following through. I feel like I've been in a rut for a while. I've been surviving and I need to start thriving. I don't want taking care of myself to feel like a chore. A friend of mine told me to stop waiting around to become the person I want and to simply start living in a way that aligns with my desires. That was the wake-up call I needed. For September (and beyond) I'm prioritizing my wants and needs.

My goals:

  • Put effort into the way I look every day. I know "look good, feel good" is real.

  • Craft a morning routine. I get overwhelmed by it being "right" so my plan is to start small with making my bed and eating breakfast.

  • Finish household tasks I've been putting off. I've convinced myself that since I live in an apartment I shouldn't put effort into it and that's not true. I deserve to be comfortable in my space.

  • Pick up one active hobby. Lately, I feel embarrassed to work out and that needs to change. I know that exercise is good for my mental health and I need to incorporate it back into my life.

  • Advocate for myself. I have a hard time saying how I feel, especially when it involves saying no. I'm going to try to be honest with myself and others about the way I am feeling.

In the name of accountability and content creation I am going to use social media to document one thing I did a day for self-care. I plan to use the #ShadesSCSept to keep track of the things I've done. I would love it if you all joined me and tagged me in your self-care activities!

This past year and some has been rough on all of us. We deserve to find joy wherever we can. Now, I'm trying to find that joy from within.

Happy September.
